A Tradition of Greatness
Established in 1898, the BMCGNY&V is New York City’s
oldest and largest clergy leadership organization. This
great institution of faith and fellowship continues to
withstand and respond to the mighty winds of change
and the many challenges of our times. The Baptist
Ministers’ Conference has endured through the era of
Jim Crow segregation and lynching in the South. It has
outlasted the Harlem Renaissance, the Great
Depression, two World Wars, the Great Northern
Migration, the Civil Rights Movement, right down to the
times of the Obama presidency.

BMCGNY&V boasts a grand tradition of great religious
leaders, preachers and teachers—the legends—
Rev. Dr. Garner C. Taylor, aka, “The Prince of
Preachers”; Reverends Adam Clayton Powell, Sr. and
Adam Clayton Powell, Jr.; Rev. Dr. Wyatt Tee Walker; Dr.
William Augustus Jones; Rev. Dr. Shelly Sampson; Dr.
Timothy Mitchell; and countless others who were very
active as members and leaders. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. visited the Conference frequently. In fact, this
Ministers’ Conference is credited for coordinating
scores of buses and mobilizing thousands of people for
the March on Washington in 1963.
According to Conference President, Rev. James D.
Morrison, “The Baptist Ministers’ Conference of Greater New York &Vicinity continues to be a beacon light that shines in our city and community.” He added, “We have watched the growth and influence of The
Positive Community over the years and now together, we will strive to reach a new level by being visible, viable,
and vocal. The bible teaches us that “without a vision the people perish.” We too, believe with Brother
Council and the good people at TPC when we are reminded that: “the progress of our children and the
integrity of our African American culture, values and traditions our collective soul-mean everything!”

The Baptist Ministers’ Conference’s fellowship meetings take place every Monday, 2pm, at the historic
Convent Avenue Baptist Church on 145th St. and Convent Ave. in Harlem. Rev. Jesse T. Williams is the
host pastor. “. . . Because a positive community is everybody’s business
… It really pays to care!
