Positive Women honored at the WEEN Awards

The sixth annual WEEN Awards took place Wednesday, Nov.16 at The Espace in New York City. The event was hosted by radio personality, Angela Yee. The event brought together a group of individuals driven to the success of leadership and solidarity; while honoring celebrities who are uplifting the movement.

This year’s honorees included veteran actress Meagan Good; G.O.O.D Music signee Teyana Taylor; music executive Ethiopia Habtemariam; actress Yara Shahidi; editor of Teen Vogue Elaine Weltheroth; executive Dia Simms; the mother of Sandra Bland; Geneva Reed-Veal; and Grammy Award-winning rap legend Lil Kim.

The honorees were presented awards by Keri Hilson, Necole Bitchie, June Ambrose, Londell McMillan, Valeisha Butterfield-Jones and Kevin Liles.

Lil Kim, was honored with the WEEN Icon Award. Lil Kim is known for changing the game for women in rap with her hit singles that spoke about drugs, growing up in the streets and sexuality.

The purpose of this event was to recognize all these women for their commitment to the empowerment of women. The Women in Entertainment Empowerment Network has served to promote education, mentorship, and an overall change for young women across the world. Proceeds from the event help support an annual summer program for emerging young women in the entertainment industry and in business called WEEN Academy.

WEEN is comprised of individuals dedicated to improving the quality of life of women worldwide. Representing the entertainment industry, WEEN has taken a leadership role in the balanced portrayal of women and partners with like-minded organizations and individuals to provide educational programs targeting women.

WEEN grants scholarships each year to deserving college students and young women entrepreneurs. WEEN also provides mentorship match-making and programs year round with the following focus:
