Return of “The MAAFA”

St. Paul Community Baptist Church (SPCBC) is gearing up for the return of “The MAAFA,” an annual experience remembering the suffering endured by Africans brought to America through the Middle Passage.

The MAAFA (Mah-Ah-Fah) is the Swahili term for “disaster, terrible occurrence or great tragedy.” Over the course of the 8-day MAAFA Commemoration (Sep 14th – 22nd), SPCBC will offer classes and discussions presented by renowned speakers including, New York Times bestselling author, Cole Arthur Riley. Speakers will conduct teachings and discussions about historical and current issues facing the Black community. This year’s focus is centered on fostering a sense of community and unity, guided by the overarching theme, “Reclaiming the Village, Restorying Our Past.”

“In a year marked by national uncertainty and mounting threats to our democracy, we find ourselves at a critical juncture. The dangers posed by certain federal policy proposals remind us of a time when the voices of Black people were silenced, and our human rights were denied,” says Rev. Dr. David Brawley, lead pastor of SPCBC. “These challenges deepen our resolve to fully embrace our cultural identity and fortify our community. Our focus on ‘Reclaiming the Village, Restorying Our Past’ is not just a theme but a necessary response to the times—it is a resolute commitment to preserving our heritage and empowering future generations to carry it forward,” he continued.

In addition to classes and discussions, SPCBC will present The MAAFA Suite…A Healing Journey ®, a largescale theatrical production that explores the trauma endured by enslaved Africans, educating viewers on the oppression inflicted upon generations of Africans in America. There will also be interactive activities including an on-site walking tour of the MAAFA museum which contains artwork and historical artifacts (circa 1700s to 1800s).

All discussions and classes are free and Opening night will be held on Sunday, September 15th, 2024, at 859 Hendrix Street, Brooklyn, NY 11207, starting at 6:00 p.m., with additional performances on the 16th, 19th, and 20th at 7:00 p.m. For the full schedule of events, please visit www.spcbc.com/maafa24
