Newark board member A’Dorian Murray-Thomas continues to give back to the community – The Positive Community

Newark board member A’Dorian Murray-Thomas continues to give back to the community

Every month Newark Board of Education School Board Member and newly elected Essex County Commissioner A’Dorian Murray-Thomas takes local Newark students to Seton Hall Men’s Basketball games at the Prudential Center.

Tuesday night about 100 students, teachers, principals and parents from schools all over Newark watched the Pirates get the win! “In many communities basketball and other sports saves lives”, A’Dorian Murray-Thomas said. “It is my hope that attending these games will inspire and motivate young people not just to play sports but to attend college. Playing sports in schools and in your community create direct pathways to college admission that disproportionately benefit Black and brown and low-income students. Eduction is always one of the greatest equalizers.”

Educator and Sigma Beta Club Leader Rashon Mickens agreed. He said, “Basketball taught me to be disciplined. In order to be great, I had to be disciplined by putting in the time to practice and work on my game. I had a set routine and kept it for years, and eventually, I began to make considerable improvements to my game. Hardwork eventually paid off when I accepted a full athletic and academics college scholarship.”

The Newark community is grateful for A’Dorian’s consistent commitment to Newark students and families. One principal shared, “A’Dorian is always giving back. We can’t thank her enough!”
