Sounds of Stevie Wonder at Shaq Theater
Oh what a night! Over two solid hours of Stevie Wonder’s music—”Music for the Community” as producer of the event, Yvonne Garrett Patterson called it. With two fantastic bands and stellar vocalists, it was a spectacular evening at the Shaq Theater at CitiPlex 12 Newark.
Pianist James Austin Jr. and his band featuring Jeremy Warren on drums, Motoki Mihara on bass, and vocals by Jackie Jones set the mood for the evening with magnificent renditions of several of the great Wonder’s songs.
The crowd was eager for more when Austin and his group left the stage, and they were not disappointed. Greg Bufford and his band began to play and singer songwriter and recording artist Ty Stephens began to sing. Song after song, the beautiful sounds of Stevie Wonder’s music—positive, joyful, love affirming— filled the air. Led by Bufford on drums, Alva Nelson on piano, Bill Dotts on bass, and Miho Nobuzane on synthesizer, the band showed their love of the music just as much as the audience did. It was quite a night.
