Public Safety and Policing Symposium at Kean University

A symposium series around policing and public safety kicked off at Kean University on March 1, 2025. Designed to foster meaningful community conversation on public safety, health, and community; the event aimed toward advancing evidence-informed policy solutions to today’s public safety challenges.

National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial, delivered the keynote address. The series focuses on recommendations from the final report of the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing convened during President Barack Obama’s administration.

Released in May 2015 in response to national concerns about police practices and community relations, the report provides a framework for law enforcement agencies to build public trust, ensure officer safety, and promote effective crime recluction. It outlines six key pillars with recommendations and action items to guide the transformation of policing in the 21st century. The report has influenced law enforcement policies nationwide encouraging agencies to adopt

evidence-based practices that align with community needs.

The series was developed as a collaboration between NOBLE

(The New Jersey Chapter of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives), The Positive Community Corporation, the New Jersey Urban Mayors Association, and the John S. Watson Institute for Urban Policy and Research at Kean University.

The series continues with a symposium on April 15, in Atlantic City, a Youth symposium in July, and a final event in the fall of 2025.
