Leadership on a Global Stage

Dr. Patricia Ramsey, a leader in higher education, began her five-year term as a commissioner of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) on January 1, 2026. The president of Medgar Evers College, her appointment places Dr. Ramsey among the key figures responsible for maintaining educational quality and institutional excellence over a large area. MSCHE has been recognized as “a global institutional accreditor” by the United States Secretary of Education since 1952.

MSCHE plays a critical role in providing institutions with access to federal student aid programs. The United States Department of Education recognizes agencies that are seen as authorities on the quality of higher education. Under the Higher Education Act, these accrediting agencies must meet regulatory criteria set by the Department. This responsibility makes MSCHE commissioners vital in deciding which institutions can provide federal financial aid to their students. The reach of MSCHE’s accreditation authority is vast. The commission accredits institutions in 46 states, the District of Columbia, 2 territories, and 100 countries. This gives commissioners like Dr. Ramsey responsibilities that go beyond regional limits. As a commissioner, Dr. Ramsey will evaluate institutions seeking initial accreditation, review ongoing member institutions, and assist in shaping policies that define educational quality in this diverse environment.
