Dance Africa 2023
In May, Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) presented its 46th annual DanceAfrica Festival titled “Golden Ghana: Adinkra, Ananse, and Abusua.” This year’s festival featured the National Theater of Ghana’s National Dance Company, which was chosen by the DanceAfrica team after they auditioned 21 companies from various regions in Ghana. The dancers’ performances honored the healing wisdom, regeneration, and legacy of Ghanaians through dance.
With the spirit of the Nguzo Saba (the seven principles of Kwanzaa) filling the streets and stages, DanceAfrican presented a choreographic, sonic, and cinematic journey through the past and present of Ghanaian culture. Dance Africa Spirit Walkers, ArkestraAfrica with Musical Director K. Osei Williams, Afropop vocalist Amma Whatt, BAM Restoration Youth Arts Academy, The Council of Elders, Film Africa, and the DanceAfrica Bazaar provided attendees with entertainment, education, and empowerment. The DanceAfrica journey into a timeless future continues.
