Harlem Rocket Launches Harlem’s First African American-Owned Maritime Tour

Honoring Hazel N. Dukes and Revitalizing Harlem’s Waterfront

A bold new chapter in Harlem’s cultural and economic history sets sail with the debut of the Harlem Rocket, the neighborhood’s first-ever African American-owned sightseeing tour boat. Anchored at West 125th Street’s Harlem Pier, the Harlem Rocket offers 40-minute high-speed tours along the Hudson River, highlighting Harlem’s untold maritime history and heroes like Crispus Attucks and Matthew Henson.

The Harlem Rocket is part of the larger Harlem Gateway Waterfront Initiative, an ambitious vision to transform Harlem’s waterfront into a vibrant hub for tourism, education, and workforce development. Tours will operate six days a week with up to eight trips per day, providing both residents and visitors with dynamic views of the Manhattan skyline while connecting them to Harlem’s deep cultural legacy.

On May 6, 2025, the vessel was christened in honor of civil rights icon Hazel N. Dukes, longtime president of the NAACP New York State Conference. The ceremony will feature co-founders Garry A. Johnson and Michael A. Preston, civic leaders, and dignitaries, celebrating the Rocket not just as a tourist attraction, but as a symbol of community empowerment and renewal.

Built by renowned Derecktor Shipyards in Mamaroneck, NY, the Rocket signifies new life for an underused asset—the Harlem waterfront. With support from partners including the NYC Economic Development Corporation, Raymarine Marine, and UniverSoul Circus, the project also opens doors to maritime careers and small business growth.

“The Harlem Rocket is a movement,” said Johnson. “It’s about celebrating our heritage, creating opportunity, and steering Harlem toward a prosperous future.”
