The Sounds of New Orleans from the Original Pinettes Brass Band

A joyous occasion at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture honored women in music during Women’s History Month. The event featured the eight-piece Original Pinettes Brass Band from New Orleans, the only female brass band in the universe.
Performing songs by the Temptations and other soul groups, the Pinettes blended New Orleans second line jazz and hip-hop styles. It was unique, different, and exciting for a standing room only audience. They jumped up, danced, shouted, and applauded the fabulous Original Pinettes Brass Band.
The band members compare what goes into their music to putting diverse staples together—“like the ingredients used in creating gumbo.”
