The Power Behind the Numbers

Lydia York: Redefines Accountability
in Delaware
In an era when trust in institutions is often questioned, Delaware State Auditor Lydia York is focused on something fundamental—making sure the numbers tell the truth and the system works for the people it serves. Her journey is rooted in a lifelong commitment to learning, service, and accountability. Raised by two educators—her mother was a school librarian, York grew up in an environment where curiosity was encouraged, and community connection was a way of life. That foundation shaped not only her worldview, but also her approach to leadership.
From an early age, she developed a disciplined way of thinking: examine the issue, understand the details, and determine the best outcome. That mindset led her to Florida A&M University (FAMU), where she chose accounting as her field of study. For York, it was a natural fit. She has long believed that numbers tell a complete and honest story.
Her career path reflects both depth and evolution. After graduating from FAMU, York began her professional career in accounting and finance, working for major companies in her hometown of Pittsburgh. More than a decade later, she made a pivotal shift, pursuing a law degree at Temple University while continuing to work fulltime. She later earned an LL.M. in Taxation, expanding her expertise at the intersection of finance and law.
York’s growing interest in public service led her into political engagement at the local level, where she became Parliamentarian of the Delaware Democratic Party. It was during this time that she began to envision a broader role—one that would allow her to directly impact how the government serves its people.
Elected in 2022, York made history as Delaware’s first African American woman to hold a statewide executive office. Since taking office, she has focused on rebuilding and strengthening the auditor’s office, which had long been under-resourced. Under her leadership, the staff has more than doubled, expanding from 12 to 29 professionals and significantly increasing the office’s capacity.
The results are measurable. The office has improved audit timeliness and efficiency, completing all audits within 45 days and earning the highest peer review rating from the National State Auditors Association. With broad statutory authority, the office plays a critical role in ensuring transparency, accountability, and responsible use of taxpayer dollars.
At its core, York’s work is about impact. “Public service,” she has said, “means thinking about how your work affects your neighbors and community.” That philosophy continues to guide her efforts as she builds a stronger, more effective Auditor’s Office—one that not only oversees government activity but also serves as a trusted resource for the people of Delaware. —TPC Staff
