Changing Creative Possibilities

King Willonius, the creative name of comedian and storyteller Willonius Hatcher, is becoming an important voice in the rapidly changing world of artificial intelligence. What separates him from many people experimenting with AI is that he approaches the technology primarily as an artist. Rather than allowing AI to determine what he creates, he starts with an idea and uses technology to help bring that idea to life. His work sits at the intersection of comedy, music, filmmaking, technology and Black culture.

His breakthrough came with “BBL Drizzy,” the humorous song that became an unexpected cultural phenomenon during the 2024 Drake-Kendrick Lamar feud. Willonius created the song with generative AI, combining his own comedic concept and lyrics with AI-generated music. What began as a joke quickly became something much larger, demonstrating how a single independent creator could respond to a major cultural moment almost immediately.

The significance of “BBL Drizzy” went far beyond its humor. Metro Boomin sampled Willonius’ AI-created recording and turned it into an instrumental that became part of the larger hip-hop conversation. That helped establish the song as an important early example of AI-generated music crossing into mainstream music culture. It also forced the entertainment industry to confront questions about authorship, ownership and what happens when human creativity and machine-generated material are combined.

Willonius’ philosophy is not that AI should replace artists. Instead, he sees it as a way of expanding what an individual artist can accomplish. A comedian can experiment with music. A writer can develop visual worlds. A filmmaker can explore ideas without immediately needing a large production crew. In his view, technology can put some of the capabilities of a creative studio into the hands of one person, giving independent artists an opportunity to experiment on a scale that was previously difficult to achieve.

That philosophy grew out of a deliberate effort to learn AI rather than simply use it casually. During the writers’ strike, when opportunities in traditional entertainment were disrupted, Willonius decided to devote substantial time to understanding emerging AI tools. He experimented extensively with prompting, generated thousands of images and explored different ways of using AI for comedy, music and storytelling. His approach shows that becoming proficient with AI requires creativity, curiosity and considerable practice.

Music is only one part of his creative work. Willonius has been developing AI-assisted storytelling and filmmaking as well. His official website describes Enter the BBL Drizzyverse as an AI short film that he wrote and directed, and the film premiered at the 2025 Adobe Max Film Festival. This represents a significant evolution from making a viral song: he is exploring how AI can help him construct entire fictional worlds rather than simply individual pieces of content.

There is also an important cultural dimension to what Willonius is doing. Traditional entertainment has historically required creators to gain approval from producers, record companies, studios, agents or other gatekeepers before they could reach large audiences. AI doesn’t eliminate those gatekeepers, but it can reduce the amount of infrastructure required to begin creating. For independent Black artists especially, that can provide another avenue for developing ideas, testing concepts and building an audience without waiting for someone else to give them permission.

His career also demonstrates the importance of experimentation. Willonius has described AI as something that works particularly well when people are willing to play with it and discover its possibilities. That attitude is important because generative AI is changing so quickly that there is no single formula for mastering it. Creators have to experiment with different tools, learn their strengths and weaknesses, and continually adjust their methods.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Willonius’ work is the speed at which he can transform a cultural observation into a finished creative project. “BBL Drizzy” showed how an idea connected to a conversation happening online could become a song almost immediately. His subsequent work demonstrates that the same philosophy can be applied to visual storytelling and filmmaking. AI gives him a way to move from imagination to experimentation without having to assemble an enormous team before beginning.

King Willonius is therefore doing more than making entertaining AI content. He is demonstrating a different model of what it means to be a modern creative professional. His work suggests that the artists who thrive in the AI era may not necessarily be the people who know the most about technology, but those who understand how to combine technology with their own voice, cultural perspective and imagination. For independent creators, his journey is a powerful example of what can happen when curiosity meets new technology.
