Mayor Ted R. Green hosts Lunch and Learn Event with students of The Deron School

When East Orange resident Machi Cobb wrote a letter to Mayor Ted R. Green last year, little did he know he would be christened “Mayor for the Day” with a special lunch meeting for his cabinet (er, classmates)! Machi definitely took his new role to heart!

To complete a civics assignment last November, Machi, a student at The Deron School in Montclair, NJ, wrote to Mayor Green asking him several questions about his responsibilities as Mayor of East Orange.

Mayor Green responded warmly to the letter with an invitation for Machi and his classmates to visit City Hall.

Earlier in April, Machi and his classmates had the exciting opportunity to meet with key members of Mayor Green’s administration.

The visit allowed the students to receive a firsthand look at local government in action, bringing their classroom lessons to life.

What Machi probably did not know is that Mayor Green’s relationship with The Deron School began long before he wrote his letter.

The Deron School is where Mayor Green’s nephew, Ebn, who has cerebral palsy, was also educated and supported with resources tailored to his needs.

The Deron School of New Jersey, Inc., with two campuses in Montclair and Union, is a private school serving students ages 3-21 with multiple disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder and Down syndrome.

Mayor Green has made youth engagement a priority in his administration, emphasizing the importance of connecting with young residents.

Luncheons like the one held for Machi and his classmates create impactful experiences for students to meet city leaders and gain a better understanding of how cities operate.
