Montclair Jazz Festival 2025

The close of summer in New Jersey doesn’t mean the end of vibrant outdoor gatherings, and nowhere was that more evident than in Montclair yesterday. The town came alive with the sounds of saxophones, trumpets, and soulful voices during the highly anticipated Downtown Jamboree, the culminating event of the 2025 Montclair Jazz Festival. Thousands gathered at Lackawanna Station to soak in a day filled with world-class music, food, culture, and community spirit.
The Montclair Jazz Festival, organized annually by Jazz House Kids since 2010, has become a crown jewel of the town’s cultural calendar. Spanning over three months, this year’s festival began in early June with a variety of concerts and performances scattered throughout the summer. These events, including “Swingin’ on the Plaza” and the Soundcheck Series, set the stage for what would ultimately build to September’s grand finale.
Yesterday’s Downtown Jamboree served as a musical and cultural feast. From noon until nightfall, Lackawanna Station transformed into a vibrant hub where jazz lovers of all ages celebrated the genre’s rich history while embracing its ever-evolving sound. Families, longtime fans, and curious newcomers all mingled together, proving once again how jazz continues to unite diverse audiences.
Headlining the event were some of the most acclaimed artists in the jazz world. Two-time GRAMMY winner Alphonso Horne brought his high-energy ensemble, The Gotham Kings, while saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin and her band Phoenix ignited the crowd with their fusion of jazz, funk, and R&B. Jazzmeia Horn, a vocalist renowned for her dazzling technique and emotional depth, captivated audiences, while nine-time GRAMMY winner Christian McBride showcased his powerhouse quintet, Ursa Major, in one of the day’s most electrifying performances.
The music unfolded across two main stages, offering something for everyone. On the McBride’s World at Sea Main Stage, the JAZZ HOUSE Collective paid tribute to legendary saxophonist James Moody, while José James transported audiences with his set “1978: Revenge of The Dragon.” Later, Christian McBride and Ursa Major lit up the stage before Luisito Quintero and his ensemble added Latin rhythms that had the crowd moving. Lakecia Benjamin closed the night with a fiery performance that left the audience buzzing.
Meanwhile, the Emerging Artist Uptown Stage spotlighted rising talent and reminded attendees that the future of jazz is in capable hands. From the soulful sounds of the Violet Mujica Quartet to the youthful energy of the JAZZ HOUSE All-Stars, the lineup gave newer voices an invaluable platform. Many in the audience commented on the thrill of witnessing tomorrow’s headliners in their earliest stages.
But the Downtown Jamboree was more than just a music festival—it was an immersive cultural experience. With over 150 artisan and food vendors filling the Rao’s Homemade Marketplace and NJEDA Vendor Village, attendees could sample international cuisines, purchase handmade crafts, and support local entrepreneurs. The scent of barbecue, empanadas, and sweet treats drifted through the air, making the festival a feast for the senses in every way.
Adding to the flavor of the day were the specialty jazz-themed cocktails from Allied Beverage brands and the limited-edition Montclair Jazz Brew created by Montclair Brewery. Festivalgoers crowded around the Jazz Bars to raise a glass to live music and the community spirit that Montclair has carefully nurtured through this annual celebration.
Families found plenty to enjoy as well. The Family Jazz Discovery Zone offered interactive activities designed to introduce children to jazz in a fun and accessible way. From rhythm workshops to instrument “petting zoos,” the festival ensured that the youngest attendees weren’t just passive listeners but active participants in the music-making process.
What makes the Montclair Jazz Festival remarkable is not only its scale but also its accessibility. Unlike many large-scale festivals, this event is free to the public, reflecting Jazz House Kids’ mission to make music education and performance opportunities available to all. The Downtown Jamboree represents a true community effort, where art, education, and entertainment converge.
Yesterday’s event also underscored the role of Montclair as a cultural hotspot in New Jersey. With its mix of seasoned performers, emerging artists, and community engagement, the festival has grown into one of the largest jazz gatherings in the region. The town’s streets, normally calm, pulsed with rhythm and joy as locals and visitors alike basked in a collective celebration of music.
As the final notes rang out beneath the evening sky, festivalgoers left with smiles, sore feet from dancing, and memories of a day steeped in artistry and connection. The 2025 Montclair Jazz Festival once again proved that while summer may be ending, jazz in Montclair is timeless—carrying its melodies into the fall and reminding everyone that music, at its best, is a shared experience.
