Kandy G. Lopez: Faces of Resilience

Kandy G. Lopez is an Afro-Caribbean visual artist whose work is deeply rooted in cultural inquiry, material exploration, and storytelling. Born in New Jersey and raised in Florida, Lopez’s early experiences navigating identity and place would later become central themes in her artistic practice. Her work reflects a commitment to honoring marginalized communities while inviting viewers into an intimate, reflective dialogue.

Lopez received her Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees from the University of South Florida, where she concentrated in Painting as well as Marketing and Management. This dual academic focus equipped her with both a rigorous studio foundation and a strategic understanding of the art world. She later earned her Master of Fine Arts with a concentration in Painting from Florida Atlantic University in 2014, further refining her conceptual and material approach.

As an educator, Lopez has built an equally impressive career in academia. She has taught at Florida Atlantic University and Daytona State College, and currently serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication, Media and Arts at the Halmos College of Art & Sciences at Nova Southeastern University. In the classroom, she encourages critical thinking, experimentation, and cultural awareness, mirroring the values embedded in her own practice.

Lopez’s work is driven by a desire to be challenged—both materially and metaphorically. She approaches each project as an opportunity to learn something new about her people, her heritage, and herself. For Lopez, the act of making is inseparable from discovery; if the materials do not teach her something or deepen the message, the work is not worth creating.

Central to her practice is the representation of marginalized individuals who inspire and move her. Through portraiture and mixed media, Lopez elevates overlooked narratives, giving visibility to stories often excluded from dominant cultural conversations. Her work resists surface-level representation, instead offering layered, nuanced depictions that demand sustained engagement.

A recurring element in Lopez’s art is nostalgia. She is interested in creating a dialogue between artwork and viewer that evokes memory, familiarity, and emotional resonance. This nostalgic exchange allows audiences to connect personally with the work while reflecting on broader themes of identity, resilience, and cultural continuity.

Lopez has exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibitions across North America. Her work has been shown at notable institutions including the Ringling College of Art + Design, the Armory Art Center, and the North Dakota Museum of Art. These exhibitions have solidified her reputation as a compelling and thoughtful contemporary artist.

In 2025, Lopez received the People’s Choice Award at the Orlando Museum of Art, a recognition that underscores the strong emotional connection her work fosters with audiences. That same year, she expanded her international presence by presenting her first solo exhibition at the Florence Fondation in Paris, marking a significant milestone in her career.

Currently, Lopez’s second solo exhibition at ACA Galleries, titled Textile Truths: Faces of Resilience, is on view through January 17, 2026. The exhibition continues her exploration of identity, materiality, and cultural endurance, reaffirming her place as a powerful voice in contemporary art—one committed to learning, honoring, and telling the stories that matter.
