NJ Governor Mikie Sherrill Attends AME Conference

The sanctuary of St. Matthew AME Church buzzed with anticipation as Mikie Sherrill arrived at the 154th Annual Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Presiding over the March 2026 gathering was Samuel Lawrence Green Sr., who welcomed clergy, elected officials, and community leaders to the historic convening held in St. Matthew AME Church in Orange.

The conference served as a major moment of fellowship and dialogue within the AME Church’s First Episcopal District, bringing together voices committed to faith, justice, and civic engagement. Attendees gathered to reflect on the church’s enduring role in advocacy, spiritual leadership, and community empowerment throughout the region.

Introduced by Charles Boyer, pastor of Greater Mt. Zion AME Church, Governor Sherrill expressed appreciation for the AME Church’s longstanding commitment to uplifting communities and expanding opportunity across New Jersey. Her remarks underscored the importance of continued collaboration between state leadership and Black faith-rooted public policy organizations, including Salvation and Social Justice, founded by Rev. Boyer.

As worship, leadership, and public service converged beneath the sanctuary’s historic walls, the gathering reflected the AME Church’s enduring influence as both a spiritual institution and a catalyst for social progress.
